The 25th of November, 2008 the IRS granted Nomsa a status of 501(c)(3).
From the IRS website:
“The exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) are charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals. The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.”
This means that the IRS has recognized Nomsa’s work to restore the homeless through community. We’re excited about the work we’ve been able to do so far and we look forward to the many benefits this status gives us including (but not limited to): tax-exemption for purchases, ability to receive tax-deductible donations, various free tools and resources, as well as increased oversight and accountability.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit we are open with our finances, the use of our resources, and our goals and purposes.
Ultimately this status reflects who the work we are doing already and our increasing vision to create sustainable life change for our homeless friends.
